"Square Tower at Cliff Palace, Mesa Verde N.P., Colorado. Containing more than 200 rooms and 23 kivas, Cliff Palace is the largest cliff dwelling in the Southwest. Around A. D. 1200 the mesa top dwellers began to build the Park's renowned cliff dwellings. They chose as buildings sites the shallow caves and overhangs in the walls of the mesa canyons. Their occupation did not last long, for by A. D. 1300 all the great houses were deserted."
