Paramaribo - Suriname

In these first days of 2023, Eric has already managed to surprise me with another postcard from a country that I only mentioned a couple of times on this blog. I only had 3 postcards from Suriname and now I've a written and stamped card from there.   

Today I'm posting Eric's and Luca's cards, both from the Historic Inner City of Paramaribo, a UNESCO WHS since 2002.

Paramaribo is a former Dutch colonial town dating from the 17th and 18th centuries planted on the Northeastern coast of tropical South America. Composed of mainly wooden buildings, the plain and symmetrical architectural style illustrating the gradual fusion of Dutch and other European architectural and later North American influences as well as elements from Creole culture, reflects the multi-cultural society of Suriname. - in: https://whc.unesco.org

The Waterkant is the oldest and one of the most important streets of Paramaribo. The street is located in the historic centre on the Suriname River, and was the location where ships used to arrive.

Central Suriname Nature Reserve

Central Suriname Nature Reserve is one of the two UNESCO sites in Suriname.

The Central Suriname Nature Reserve comprises 1.6 million ha of primary tropical forest of west-central Suriname. It protects the upper watershed of the Coppename River and the headwaters of the Lucie, Oost, Zuid, Saramaccz, and Gran Rio rivers and covers a range of topography and ecosystems of notable conservation value due to its pristine state. Its montane and lowland forests contain a high diversity of plant life with more than 5,000 vascular plant species collected to date. The Reserve's animals are typical of the region and include the jaguar, giant armadillo, giant river otter, tapir, sloths, eight species of primates and 400 bird species such as harpy eagle, Guiana cock-of-the-rock, and scarlet macaw. - in: http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1017

Paramaribo - Suriname

"Suriname is a country in northern South America. Suriname was formerly known as Nederlands Guyana, Netherlands Guiana or Dutch Guiana. Suriname is situated between French Guiana to the east and Guyana to the west. The southern border is shared with Brazil and the northern border is the Atlantic coast. The southernmost border with French Guiana is disputed along the Marowijne river; while the once-disputed boundary with Guyana was arbitrated by the Unite Nations Convention on Law of the Sea on September 20, 2007.
